Why Should I Buy Blu Ray?

Blu Ray is the next big thing in home cinema. With considerable improvements over DVD in the amount of content held on the disc, picture and sound quality, Blu Ray is a true next generation movie viewing experience. This short guide explains the differences between Blu Ray and DVD discs.

Consumers who enjoy watching films at home are now in the age of another new, and much improved, technology - Blu-Ray discs. Following the legacy of the first videotapes, the short-lived laser discs, and the ubiquitous DVD discs, Blu-Ray technology represents the latest quantum leap in movie viewing quality.

Regarding the players, Blu-Ray players are currently made by some of the biggest names in consumer electronics, companies like Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, and many more. These players are almost universally backward compatible with DVD discs, so those who already have a large library of films on DVD will still be able to watch them on their new Blu-Ray units.

The Blu-Ray discs themselves look, to the naked eye, much like the older DVDs. Their storage capacity, however, is roughly five times as great - a DVD can hold about 5 gigabytes of data on a single-layer disc, and 9 gigabytes on a dual-layer. A Blu-Ray disc can hold closer to 25 gigabytes on a single-layer disc, and 50 gigabytes on a dual-layer.

In addition, the discs are physically a bit more resistant to damaging scratches, helping to ensure many, many years of clear viewing. Even apart from their use for watching films at home, Blu-Ray discs are also much better for things like console gaming and computer data storage.

The real arena where the format shines, though, is for enjoying films at home. With all of that extra disc capacity comes the ability for films to have much greater quality in both picture and sound. Blu-Ray is the only format to natively display in 1080p, the highest video resolution of modern high-definition televisions.

For contemporary films released to the home video market, this means sharper video, more vibrant colours, and truly amazing surround sound. The quality of the home Blu-Ray experience is much closer to that of the cinema in every way. Special bonuses included on the disc along with the main feature, like extra audio commentaries and behind-the-scenes featurettes, also benefit greatly, as many more of them can be included.

Blu-Ray players and discs are now the gold standard for emulating the theatre experience in the comfort of the home. With stunning video quality and truly immersive audio, Blu-Ray is quite simply the best way to enjoy films at home.
